Thom and Joe turn to the neon-lit gridded ultra-aesthetic world of synthwave as they turn to The Midnight's debut album, Endless Summer, a nostalgic look back upon the halcyon days of the 1980s heyday that synthwave explores, and evokes through its audio-visual reimagining of the decade.
Along the way, the duo discuss the disparate elements that brought the genre into being, from 2011's Drive to how Grand Theft Auto Vice City totally recontextualised the era for a generation, to the ultra-violent Hotline Miami that brought the genre into the mainstream. Thom and Joe also discuss the role of visuals in this genre, and how The Midnight's perspective of the decade and growing up during it differs from many of their peers in a wide-ranging discussion of the 1980s and its culture.
